Portals Vells
Portals Vells is a distinct, quadruple creek just a mile south of Cabo Falco. It has low-lying cliffs on two internal sides with a forest of pine trees on the opposite sides, making it a popular destination for adventurous tourists and locals, and nudists. The shallow water is good for swimming and pedal boarding. It has three small beaches, all of which are clean and are marked with buoys for swimmers.
The southern cala is the most crowd-friendly as it has ample accommodation and restroom areas. If you plan to stay for a day or two, look for places in this part of the anchorage, from which going to other areas is easier.
Portals Vells is about 6 kilometers from Magaluf and has a totally different mood than the party hub. Here you can have some good family time on the beach. Water sport facilities are seasonal and very rare.
Mooring at Portals Vells
Anchoring suggestion is 2-8 meters over sand and weed. Do note that only vessels that are up to 9 meters in length can be properly accommodated into the calas. If you have a longer yacht, stick to other anchorages or avoid entering the creek. Be cautious about some rocks that can be easily noticed. A tripline is advised.
Easterly winds are possible but they are not obstructive. Road transit is poor and most tourist operators take a ferry or private yachts into the calas.
Places to Visit
Unlike Playa de Palmanova, Playa de Magaluf, and Cala Vines that have proper towns touching the shores, there is not much to see here. But you can still check out the tombs dating back to Phoenician times present in the caves in the southern cliffs. One of these tombs is known to be converted into a small shrine, that will provide a great adventurous exercise if you’re interested.
There is also a tower on Pta. de S’Estaca towards the northern end.
Parts of the beaches such as Playa del Mago and Platja del Rei in this anchorage are also designated nudist areas.
Other areas of interest nearby are the Western waterpark in Magaluf, the caves of de la Mare de Deu, Port Adriano, the nudist beach El Mago, and Playa del Rei beach that has some of the best local food offerings in town.
You can also visit the nearby village towns to take in the local culture, gastronomy, and traditions. The scarce population is welcoming as most of them also run shops and kiosks selling handmade objects and showpieces. A stroll through the villages will be a fabulous experience for those interested in Mallorcan culture and to see how it varies from village to village as you move away from central Palma.
Provisioning and Services
There are no major provisioning facilities except for water taps on the quay. Restaurants and shops line the beaches but most of them shut shop by evening. They have public restaurants but there are no showers or changing rooms. You will have to depend on your stay option.
You can hire sunbeds and umbrellas from the local shops to have a small picnic by the beachfront.
It also has chiringuitos (bars) on the beaches that offer exotic Mallorcan cuisines such as tapas that can be a great option for lunch and dinner.
