Ciutadella is the town we tell clients not to miss on Menorca: honey-stone palaces, a cathedral above a narrow medieval harbor, and the most atmospheric evening walk in the Balearics. On a charter it’s the west coast counterweight to Mahon, and the prettier one to step ashore in.
It sits on Menorca’s sunset side, which is exactly how we use it: the natural first stop when we route clients across from Mallorca’s north coast.
Mooring and marina notes
We’ll be straight about this one: the historic harbor is narrow and shallow, with limited space for visiting yachts, so larger boats use the newer facilities near the harbor mouth or anchor off. The west coast is also more exposed than Mahon’s great inlet, so we let the captain call this stop on the day’s conditions. In our experience the extra planning is always worth the evening you get in return.
What’s around the port
The old town starts at the quayside: the cathedral, the arcaded lanes, and harbor-edge restaurants where you can watch your own boat from the table. South of town begin the calas Menorca is famous for, Macarella, Mitjana, and en Turqueta, and we plan the next day’s swimming around them.
Fitting Ciutadella into your week
Cross from Mallorca, spend the evening ashore, then work the southern calas east toward Mahon. That’s the classic Menorca line, and it’s the one we book most. Details in our Menorca charter area guide.
